Readers ride of the month: VW Golf Mk2

golfwebDerek was on good form when he chose the parts for his Golf Mk2 and left the motor with Sybie Coetzee and the team at Nitro Performance. On the job list was a complete flow of the head and some work on the cams while the bottom end had a set of 83mm Arias pistons. It was also fitted with a front mounted intercooler, a Dicktator management system, ARP bolt kit and of course a big T61 turbo charger. On the dyno the 2000cc 16V motor made 227kW at 0.8bar but the motor should take 2.0bar and this should see it make over 300kW easily. Read more

cover991On Sale: 17 November

Issue 99 has just been wrapped up. It was a chaotic one; you’ll notice that this update is less than a month after our last one, that’s how busy we’ve been. We are however, super amped to bring you this issue as it has some killer content. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, it does.

So what is there to look forward to in our last double-digit issue? For starters, our cover car is the epitome of Old School Cool. An air force grey Mk1 2-door with all the right old-school retro bits combining euro flavour. This has to be one of the best efforts we’ve ever seen – even I like it! And that’s saying something! Sticking to the VW theme, we bring you Michael’s track ripping Evo substitute. Andy took it for a drive and was blown away by the performance of this GTI. Goodies from all the right tuning houses make this Golf V a force to be reckoned with. Read more

Sunday saw the final round of the Autozone Sport Compact Series. It was the final chance for some of the competitors to score vital championship points and the competition was hot and heavy.

One particular battle unfolded after brewing for most of the day. Richard Jordaan in the SnS Nissan Champ ran consistent 8.9-second runs all day with a best of 8.88.

Boeta Kotze, piloting the insane Emotion Toyota pick up also wowed the crowds with a pass of 8.9.

But then, later on in the day, the two were paired up against each other in the eliminations with only a 0.050 difference in the dial-ins, making it virtually heads up.

Jordaan launched hard but it seemed that Kotze was even stronger, the two running side by side up until about the 200m mark where the Emotion Toyota expired in a plume of smoke.

Details surrounding the engine failure are sketchy at best but it was evident that both drivers were giving it their all.

I’m sure Boeta Kotze will run even quicker in days to come and Richard Jordaan will be trying everything to keep him at bay.img_0641
