Money can’t buy brains – GTR crash ends in fraud!

March 18, 2010 by · 1 Comment

Yup, some people really shouldn’t be allowed to sponge oxygen.  I mean if you’re gonna do something completely stupid, like street race at night, then make sure there are no cameras around with footage that can be used as evidence.  Added to that, if you’re gonna be stupid and street race, then make sure you can actually drive properly.  The Nissan GTR is one of the best handling cars out there, but in the hands of a plonker, it’s just another car.  Brainy brother and sister Jay and Tracy Chen from Southern California were arrested on suspicion of insurance fraud after investigators found a YouTube video show their crash during a street race.

“Investigators say 21-year-old Jay Chen and his 29-year-old sister, Tracy, both of Diamond Bar, California initially gave conflicting reports about what caused $76,000 in damage to Jay’s 2009 Nissan GT-R. After the video was discovered on net, prosecutors charged Jay Chen with six counts of felony insurance fraud and his sister with one count.  They were booked March 5 and both face prison time and fines if they are convicted”.

Lol – just lol.  There’s more info here and here.

The Race-ist Premieres

March 18, 2010 by · 1 Comment

It’s no joke!

It’s been a while time since I’ve had to wait this long for something, I’m made to think of waiting to get my drivers license and waiting for my Matric results to come out. And that was a long time ago but the sense of occasion is just as great.

For the last 18 months we’ve been involved with the conception, planning and production of the first motor racing based film to ever come out of South Africa – The Race-ist.

We’ve been bombarding the web and the magazine with info and details on this local feature film for a while now. We watched as the initial casting took place and stood by as fast cars got chased down the closed off roads of lower Jo’burg in the wee hours of the morning. We also shared in the disappointment of not being able to see a December premiere materialize and realigned our targets as the release was bumped a few months further down the line.

As with my Matric results and my drivers license, the wait eventually ends and one is reminded of the proverbial “Good things come to those who wait.” The wait is almost over. With the investors happy and the crew finally at rest, we can unequivocally say that The Race-ist will hit cinemas on the 1st of April. No, it’s no joke, it’s for real this time! Make sure that wherever you are that you get yourself to a cinema to experience this digital landmark occasion firsthand.

To get ready for the festivities, the official The Race-ist website is giving away a Sony Playstation 3. Direct your browser to www.race-ist.co.za or your cell browser to www.therace-ist.mobi to enter the competition. There’s tickets to the premiere up for grabs as well. Not only will you be able to enter the competitions but you’ll be able to watch the trailer and other snippets even if you’re browsing from your cell phone. Check out the wallpapers and read up on the directors blog about the finer details of the film.

This movie promises to be exciting, funny, moving and inspiring and the cars are just as hot as the ladies! From insane Toyota Supras and Nissan Skylines to American Muscle and tricked out Sciroccos, there’s a car in it for everyone.

Genius or just Super Smart?

You know the thoughts you’re thinking now?  Well yeah, that’s pretty much what we thought when we got the mail documenting the build process of this Smart.  These things are powered by a monster 900cc turbo lump, and when they get serious upgrades in Europe, people shove in a GSX-R or Hyabusa bike engine.  This is SA though, we don’t screw around.  A madman has tunnelled his Smart for a propshaft and added in a Toyota 4AG-E motor into the mix – UP FRONT!  As if that’s not enough, he added boost!  Wally and Andy headed out to the workshop it was created in, and true as nuts, the car is real!  Check it out! Can you imagine a 200kW Smart?  No need to, here it is!

Dutch Dyno Day in Meyerton

Jean from Dutch Auto, an exhaust place in Meyerton, hosted a dyno day on the past weekend.  He’d told me about it a while back and phoned me during the week to remind me it was on.  No problem, I’d head out there on Saturday morning to see what the Vaal Triangle has on offer.  Was I surprised?  You betcha!  Considering it was out in the sticks, the array of cars was insane, here’s a sample or two…
