STREET KINGS CHALLENGE works along the lines of how our Hot Hatch Challenge worked – Street Kings is for daily-driven hatchbacks like Golf, Polo and Opel Corsa etc (if you’re unsure, drop a email to neeresh@speedandsound.co.za) with the only difference being this is aimed for the man on the street with an average system.

If placed in the top 3 of the previous events, you will be moved into a higher class.

NO Dealer/distributor or distributor-assisted vehicles are allowed compete.

So if you would like to partake in our shoot-out (which will be covered in the industry leading publication, Speed and Sound Magazine) please read the rest of the rules and if you need any assistance on the day, officials will be on hand to guide you.

As always, photos of cars/owners, list of the equipment used and dB reading will be recorded and published.

 

ENTRY FEE    

R150-00 per car (2 runs)

 

TESTING EQUIPMENT

Term Lab Magnum SPL meter and clamp probes for the decibel reading.

Standard placement jig for sensor placement.

Volt meter for max and min voltage during your run.

No test tones allowed. Music only.

 

CLASSES

Street King 1 = 0 -101 square inch – (1x 10-inch or 2 x 8-inch or 3x 6.5-inch woofers).

Street King 2 = 102-160 square inch – (1x 12-inch or 2 x 10-inch or 3x 8-inch woofers).

Street King 3 = 161-240 square inch – (1x 15-inch or 2x 12-inch or 3x 10-inch woofers).

Street King 4 = 241-360 square inch – (1x 18-inch or 2x 15-inch or 3x 12-inch woofers).

 

RULES

Voltage

The maximum allowed voltage 14.9V.

A volt meter will be attached to the amplifier to measure the maximum and minimum voltage during your run.

Max of 2000rpm is allowed.

 

Power Cables

Cable is limited to a maximum of one run of 0-gauge or 2 runs of 4-gauge.

The cable needs to be neatly run underneath the carpet or car.

The cable should not visible inside the cabin area.

 

Batteries

  • A maximum of one battery is allowed.
  • The battery needs to be mounted in the OEM location.
  • No Multi-cells, Lithium of any sort, Super or Ultra capacitors allowed.
  • Maximum physical size allowed will be capped at 1000 square inches.
  • The battery tray may be modified to allow for larger battery fitment; however the battery needs to be secured and safe. If the battery is not secure, the car will not be allowed to run.
  • A maximum of one 2 Farad capacitor is allowed.
  • The must be a fuse on the power cable, no larger than 150A.

 

Enclosure

The maximum allowed port size will be capped at a single 4-inch port per subwoofer. 110mm PVC pipe is allowed.

Should you opt to use a slot port, its area needs to conform to the square inch area of a 4-inch port.  Note that if you chose to use a slot port and you have two drivers, you will need to have two ports. You may not combine the port area and make one large port.

Enclosure height cannot exceed 600mm maximum height which will be calculated from the floor of the boot. If you have amplifiers under your enclosure, we will still measure from the base of the boot.

All equipment used, must be commercially available through standard retail channels and may not be modified in any way. (retailer, box store, etc.)

 

Interior

  • The car interior needs to resemble OEM. You will not be allowed to compete if you have missing door panels or any other interior bits which the car was designed to have other than the rear parcel shelf.
  • The Rear parcel shelf can be removed however should you do so, its mounting points (side panels) need to remain fixed in its OEM position.
  • No shielding of the sensor will be allowed.
  • No seats are allowed to be removed from the car for the run.
  • Seating may not be modified in anyway.
  • The front seats maybe replaced with other seats however they may not be modified in any way to enhance SPL.
  • The sensor needs to be visible to the judge at ALL times and we will not allow anything from obstructing our view into the car. So, in other words, you are not allowed to cover the windscreen with any banners or other material which prohibits us or spectators from looking into the cabin during your run. This includes dark tint on the front windscreen and stickers going across the middle of the windscreen
  • The car needs to come into the lanes with the rear seats locked in the upright position. If the seat has 3 locking positions, it needs to at least lock on the 2nd one. If the seat has seven locking positions, it needs to be able to lock on the 4th one.
  • You may fold down the rear seats after the car has been inspected
  • You cannot move or reposition any equipment after folding down the rear seats.
  • Your car needs to remain safe at all times. (No exposed cables)
  • No parts of the seats will be allowed to be removed.
  • No taping up of any air vents or ducts are allowed.

 

Head unit

The head unit should be mounted in the OEM location and may not be used from outside of the car.

No podiums allowed.

 

Amplifiers

A maximum of one amplifier per subwoofer.

Amplifiers will be clamped.

The Class limit is 1500W RMS.

 

Safety

As per Fire and Safety Rules please ensure you have a fire extinguisher next to the car at all times. If you don’t have one, please borrow one from a friend before entering the lanes.

 

DISPUTES

Should there be any disputes

  • A form needs to be purchased from the judge at a cost of R1000-00.
  • No disputes will be entertained without the necessary form.
  • Disputes are only valid if it pertains to an infringement on a rule.
  • Disputes need to be done on the day before prize giving.
  • Should the dispute be valid, the payment will be refunded in full.
  • Should the car in question be found legal, R500-00 will go to the person whose car was protested and the other R500 to the judge.
  • Judges decision is final

  • Taping/sealing up of vents are not allowed.
  • A maximum of two people are allowed to run the car. That’s one pilot and one co-pilot.
  • Both the operator/pilot and the co-pilots feet (as in both feet) need to be firmly on the ground at all times.
  • Should co-pilots try bracing the roof or doors with their hands or body, they are not allowed to cause an indentation.
  • You are not allowed to place anything on the roof.
  • Should your windscreen have duct tape around the rubbers, you may be asked to remove the duct tape after your run to verify that the mounting of the windscreen has not being modified in anyway.
  • No body modifications allowed.
  • The car needs to be open for our photographer to take a picture of the engine bay, the interior, the boot and the driver with the car for us to publish in the Speed and Sound magazine and website.
  • Judge’s decision is final

DISPUTES

Should there be any disputes

  • A form needs to be purchased from the judge at a cost of R1000-00.

  • Disputes are only valid if it pertains to an infringement on a rule.
  • Disputes need to be done on the day before prize giving.
  • Should the dispute be valid, the payment will be refunded in full.

  • No Body modifications allowed.
  • The car needs to be open for our photographer to take a picture of the engine bay, the interior, the boot and the driver with the car for us to publish in the Speed and Sound magazine and website.

Other speakers
All speakers must be mounted inside the car.

  • No external speakers allowed eg. helmets etc.
  • Full range of vocals must be audible at all times – both midrange and tweeters, not just tweeters.
  • 3dBs will be deducted if midrange and highs are not audible.
  • 2dB will be deducted if only midrange or highs are audible.

 

Interior

While this class is aimed at the man on the street, we’re also using it as a gateway to ready competitors to jump to the Hot Hatch division. Therefore, we will be moving competitors who have placed in the top three of last year’s division into this class.
